Fundamental Design Elements That can Positively Impact the Workplace!

No one wants to go to work in a stuffy office as that will really drive down morale and enthusiasm and so this article will endeavour to advise you on how to make the office a productive and welcoming workplace using a bit of that all-important feng-shui! A work environment that provides comfortable ambient conditions, enables individual control and adjustment of these conditions can positively impact individual and team motivation. Below are some of the ways in which a workplace can be optimised to promote maximum productivity so read carefully!

1. Temperature: Temperature actually makes a staggering difference in terms of work performance, who would have thought that a difference of +1°C could lead to a 1-2% decrease in performance! As a boss, you need to ensure that thermal comfort is created through the right combination of temperature, airflow and humidity, in simpler terms maintain an ideal office temperature of 21-22°C. A good way of achieving this is by providing air conditioning and heating units alongside operable windows or window coverings to maximise sunlight, airflow and temperature control.

2. Nature: Who doesn’t like to be surrounded by nature and all things green! It is a given that people prefer to work in a calm environment and plants provide a continuous source of oxygen and sensory change, so maybe it is time to turn your office into a mini greenhouse! It is beneficial for people to spend time outside, even for a limited time during the day, therefore it is advised to encourage your staff to step outside during their lunch hour to get some fresh air. This will also help eliminate and decrease stress levels which is a bonus.

3. Colour: Turn your office into a rainbow and you will automatically boost productivity. Brighter colours are associated with higher focus and task accuracy. Blue is associated with promoting mental control and clear, creative thinking. Pink lessens feelings of irritation, aggression, and loneliness. Red enhances feelings of strength and energy and is associated with vitality and ambition. Yellow makes people feel clear-headed and alert, allowing for clear thinking for decision making. Orange helps ease emotions and boost self-esteem. Varying colour usage through the workplace helps keep your staff happy and calm.

4. Work settings: People work best in different spaces and although it is evident you can't please everybody (as much as we try!), you can definitely make some changes to enhance the working area. Quiet zones can be implemented for more concentrated work, group tables can be introduced to encourage small group collaboration etc. This will provide a mixture of both formal and informal diverse settings to dissuade from a monotonous working environment. You can also consider a mix of teleconference, video conference, web conference, and other tools to enable different teams to communicate in the way they work most easily. Lastly, create a comfortable area to eat together at lunch and encourage socialising...we live in a world now where people don’t seem to talk in person, rather through a screen. Change this and change the way your employees gel together as a team, watch your company grow!
